Q. Which category does education marketing fall into “needs & wants” or “desires & aspirations”?

This is a very interesting question. Education spans many kinds. On the one hand, there are educational institutions such as a highly promoted school that charges a very hefty amount as fee for a student in the second grade- that is where it becomes a “desires & aspiratons” marketing. At the other end of the spectrum there is a terrific school which offers quality education at a highly affordable price and enjoys a very good reputation- this falls into the “needs & wants” category. Try and focus on needs & wants as that is where middle class India thrives.

Q. What is your take on social media marketing? Is it the future of marketing?

I’m very excited when it comes to social media marketing. The number of people on the internet is only going to increase later than sooner. Sky is the limit. The telecom market is growing wide and deep, growing at 9 million hand phones a month.E commerce is going to congregate to mobile phones in a big way. I’m more excited about M-commerce (mobile commerce). The prospect of mobile wallet is very exciting. With all this, geography is going to be history.

Q. What is the best way to market a website?

Websites firstly need a great name, to start with. The best brand name on web is not necessarily the best in the outside market. The best name would be a simple one. Something like mango.com could do very well! The shorter the name in terms of letters, the better as it is crisp and easy to recall. The next step is to focus on making the website a part of the daily life of a human being, with the content.
